Cornucopia hand vase
« on: July 17, 2024, 06:30:37 PM »
Hi everyone!
I found this board after reading the interesting article of Marinka Bozzek (author) and Angela Bowey (editor) http://www.theglassmuseum.com/glasshandvases.htm. I am researching a piece of art that we have in the Collection of the Kaluz Museum in Mexico City. It is a hand vase with a cornucopia where a flower illusion starts in the top of the vase and continue with artificial flowers as bouquet. The author is still unknown for us and we have no information except for the painting of José Agustin Arrieta titled Portrait of Josefa María Sanz and painted in the 19th Century where is depicted the hand vase. Does this vase sound familiar to anyone? Any information will be very helpful. Thanks!

Welcome to the board. Lovely but I suspect that your vase is ceramic rather than glass, which means we probably can't help you

Is it possibly a porcelain cornucopia with a dried or silk flower display? I would think the porcelain would have a makers mark if you could possibly look underneath.

Thank you very much, Lustrousstone. Yes, it looks like porcelain to me too...but this board is the only place with experts in hand vases that I know so I thought that maybe you have seen some other similar pieces while doing your research in glass. The article of Marinka Bozzek that I refered to ended like this:

"Marinka has been researching hand vases for the last couple of years, and is in the early stages of writing a book about them. She is very interested in hearing from other collectors of hand vases, and anyone who has more information, for example, original pattern books, manufacturers, or any other relevant documentation. She would love to see photos of other collector's examples of hand vases, too. You can contact her via the Glass Message Board at http://www.glassmessages.com. "

This is mainly why I decided to write to you all. But, maybe should I contact her? By any chance, do you know how to contact her directly?

Thanks again!

Yes!! I think the flowers could be silk. The problem is that the piece is stored out of Mexico City and it will take one more month until I can see it :( Meanwhile, I was trying to make some progress in the research.
So far, this is the most similar porcelain vase that I could find. https://www.intondo.com/en/products/74068/decor/decorative-object/floral-composition-in-glass-display-with-ceramic-vase-or-cornucopia-19th-century
Comes from Central Italy, 19th century. It is not a cornucopia but I found some similarities.
I will definitely look underneath for the makes mark. Thank you so much, NevB!!!

We have not seen or heard from Marinka for quite a number of years now.

I can't imagine she has lost her interest in hand vases, either glass or porcelain.

I've tracked Marinka's profile down for you. Her private messages are open, click on the envelope to get to it. I really don't think she'll mind if it is about a spectacular hand vase!  ;D

It may depend on whether or not she still has the same email address and it doesn't go to her spam.
Otherwise, finding a post Marinka wrote and replying to that might get you in contact.  :)
